Path Finder - File management redefined.

Path Finder

Path Finder is an innovative file browser and manager with powerful tools to make you more productive on Mac OS X. Designed from the ground up for maximum speed and Mac OS X integration, Path Finder has a gorgeous, accessible interface that you can customize to your heart’s content.

Over 18 months of planning, design, and development have gone into our latest release, Path Finder 4. With nearly 100 improvements, new features, and other goodies, we think it’s the biggest upgrade of our award-winning file manager ever.

“The upcoming version 4 is like the Final Cut Pro of file management. It’s a file browsing tour de force.” - John Siracusa, Ars Technica

“Cocoatech’s Path Finder may be just what you’ve been waiting for.” - Dan Frakes, Macworld magazine

“Path Finder supplements OS X’s Finder windows with pure interface joy.” - MacUser UK magazine

Optimized for Mac OS X 10.4
Path Finder 4 is our biggest code update ever. Over 80% of the application has been rewritten to take advantage of new Mac OS X 10.4 technologies. Path Finder 4 is faster and more efficient than ever! Mac OS X 10.4 has been sometimes called the “programmer’s release” of Mac OS X, and Path Finder takes advantage of many of the new methods and programming tools Tiger has to offer.

Path Finder 4.1 is now a Universal Binary and optimized for Intel and PPC computers.

Fresh, new interface
We’ve taken everything that made Path Finder’s interface great and made improvements throughout the application. Many of Path Finder’s integrated tools are easier to access, and the interface is cleaner, sleeker, and easier to use.
Everything is customizable. Want to move sidebar items such as the Shelf, Volumes list, or Preview pane to any location in the file browser window? Interested in creating a sidebar pane that shows the contents of a specific folder? Want to hide the new Split Preview pane? All of this (and more) is under your control.

Tabs! Tabs! Tabs!
It’s so cool we had to say it thrice. This was one of our biggest customer feature requests ever, and Path Finder 4 finally has them! The tabs that you know and love from <insert web browser here> are now available in the Path Finder file browser window. This opens up a whole new dimension of working with and accessing your files.

More visual delights
There’s an icon size slider right in the file browser, and you can now size icons up to Tiger’s gigantic new 256x256 icon size. ¶ On that note, Path Finder can now generate image icon previews on the fly, which will be very handy for designers, photographers, and anyone with lots of image files. ¶ Path Finder 4 now has an Bookmark Bar that gives you another way of quickly accessing favorite folders. ¶ The new View Options window organizes an incredible array of customizations and view option for the discerning interface jockey. ¶ There’s a new “Contents” contextual menu that allows you to navigate inside directories for super-fast access.

Search and ye shall find
Path Finder gives you multiple ways of finding the files you’re looking for, with Tiger’s new Spotlight search built right into the application.
Don’t like Spotlight? Path Finder also boasts a Spotlight-independent fast search that quickly finds the files you’re looking for. You can also use the brand new Filter tool to quickly filter the current directory by name, extension, or kind.

The new Select Tool
Path Finder 4’s brand new Select Tool gives you the ability to select files using a plethora of criteria with lightning speed. Need to select all of the image files in a directory containing hundreds of files? It’s no sweat with the Select tool. You can also use the Select tool to highlight files by modification date, characters in the filename, and many other criteria.

Stuffit Engine integration
Allume's Stuffit engine is now fully integrated into Path Finder. With Mac OS X 10.4 no longer including Stuffit Expander, this means you can quickly and easily compress and decompress many common file compression formats from within Path Finder.

Instant filesystem updates
No more waiting for changes to appear in file listings or on the desktop. With Path Finder 4 changes happen as you make them, so you can feel confident that what you see in Path Finder truly is what you get.

Improvements galore
Just a few of the other features and improvements in Path Finder 4 include: ¶ Trigger Tiger's new Slideshow feature right in the file browser. ¶ Brand new copy engine for fast and reliable file copying. ¶ Redesigned copy progress window that displays more information. ¶ New "Replace / Skip All" option in replace window. ¶ New built-in Console window. ¶ New fully integrated purchasing system. And more!

Freeware of the Day:

TubeTV - Convert YouTube and Google Video videos to Apple TV or iPod format.

TubeTV

Got an Apple TV or video iPod and want more content for it? Wish you could watch YouTube on your TV or iPod? Like to keep copies of your favorite YouTube videos on your Mac?

TubeTV is a new freeware program for Mac OS X Tiger and above which enables you to search for and save Google Video and YouTube videos in a format suitable for playback on your Apple TV or video capable iPod.

A built in search bar and web browser helps you conveniently locate your favorite videos, or, if you prefer, jump to the current URL of your default web browser, or paste one in directly. High quality video conversions using the H.264 codec are performed with QuickTime®. Double clicking on a saved video file will open it in iTunes allowing easy library addition and syncing to your desired device. Note that TubeTV does not interact with iTunes directly - it's the same as importing any other video file to iTunes. Alternately, just drag a saved video file on to QuickTime Player to view it locally.

Yes, it's true that Apple has added YouTube support to the AppleTV (June 20th), but TubeTV can still be helpful for saving your favorite videos and adding them permanently to your library. It's also still a great solution for viewing content on your video iPod, phone, or locally on your Mac.

TubeTV is featured as Merlin's pick of the week in episode 40 of the MacBreak Weekly Podcast (er. Netcast), and in episode 106 of the Mac ReviewCast Podcast! Thanks guys!

Older computers tend to be too slow to play YouTube videos at full speed - they stutter and skip frames. Use TubeTV to download the movie and then play it back with QuickTime player at full speed rather than suffering through the stutter - this works even on an eight year old Mac like a G4 400 MHz tower (from 1999!).

This software doesn't require an installer; just copy it to your Applications folder and launch.

Note: a preference sets whether or not the movie is converted to H.264 automatically after downloading. If conversion is enabled, you will end up with two movie files on your desktop (or wherever you choose to save them). The file ending in .m4v is the one you should open with iTunes and sync to your iPod or Apple TV.

Features:
  • Free! (donations appreciated)
  • Built in browser with search bar for YouTube and Google Video videos.
  • Support for many other sites which use flash video.
  • Auto export video as flv (flash video), or for Apple TV, Video iPod, or cell phone.
  • Option to convert existing videos to iPod, AppleTV, or cell phone friendly formats.
  • Uses the high quality H.264 video codec for export.
  • Option to grab URL from your default browser.
  • Written with Cocoa - native to Mac OS X.
  • Universal binary - Intel, PPC native.
